SAHPRA investigating cause of death of 28 people who died after COVID-19 jabs

Out of the 28 fatalities that were reported, majority received Pfizer shot whilst a few received J&J’s.

According to the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA), 28 people died after being vaccinated in South Africa as of the 07th of July 2021. On Wednesday, Boitumelo Semete-Makokotlela, SAHPRA’s CEO, said during a Portfolio Committee briefing that the health regulator is looking at a range of side effects reported from the vaccines. Altogether the regulator has received about 3,370 reports of adverse events following the vaccinations and about 279 reports of adverse events of special interest, which are events of scientific and medical concern. Out of those cases, 28 were reported as fatal. Of the fatal events, about 86% (24) of the individuals received the Pfizer vaccine and only approximately 14% (4) received the Johnson and Johnson shot.

At this stage however the regulator says, there is no evidence that the individuals had died as a direct result of taking these vaccines. “We need to determine if the event that we saw is indeed related to the vaccine or related to something else. These are very comprehensive studies that would be conducted. Autopsies will be done, and the history of the individuals and the medication that they were taking. It is quite an extensive process that is going to be conducted”, said Dr Semete-Makokotlela. According to data retrieved from the National Health Department, a little over one million South African’s have received the J&J vaccine and around 4.5 million received the Pfizer. Overall, a total of 5,5 million vaccinations have been administered thus far.
