SAHPRA commences OTC online directory build

The South African drug regulator plans to launch mobile friendly platform during the second quarter of 2021.

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has commenced the build for an online directory for approved over the counter (OTC) medicines. Announced on the regulator's site on 6 January, the directory which is expected to be ready for launch by May 2021 will include all Schedule 0, 1 and 2 registered OTC medicines. Once available, the directory will be accessible through the domain The development is yet another progressive step taken by the regulator since Dr Boitumelo Semete-Makokotlela took over the reigns at the beginning of 2020.

Expected to be a mobile friendly site, it "...will assist with providing the public and healthcare professionals with a detailed guide as per the information found in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) to all registered OTC products available in South Africa, including complementary medicines once registered. Where a PIL is not as yet approved, the information from the Professional Information (PI) will be used.", according to SAHPRA. The system will be designed to be user-friendly and secure, with each manufacturer allocated secure login credentials for use by their Responsible Pharmacist or designee.
